Last month flying from FRA-YYZ I was told the flgiht checked in full in J so no upgrades. Took my bulkhead seat and about 15 minutes later the agent came on board and moved me to J - not sure if they'd do that for domestic though.
They do. I've had it happen twice this year on domestic flights.
