I do sympathise with the MIL for not having her coat but to put this all down to an error by a FA is stretching things a bit far IMO.
Yes the FA could have proactively returned it but it does sound like there were maybe more imprtant things happening at the time and it was good of them to give the F passengers the opportunity to leave.
Sounds to me like she had a few champers, forgot about her coat, didnt ask for it, left the plane without it and then remembered too late and now it's someone elses fault.
There is a chance you will get it back. I've heard many stories of happy reunions with property that people are happy to admit they have accidentally left on board and BA and BAA have been very helpful.
