NZ*Trout did this on NZ38 in 2009. Two separate tickets AKL-HKG/HKG-LHR but effectively as a through-flight. This was as NZ introduced their "we won't through-check on separate itins" and AKL premium checkin wouldn't through-check his bag at all. The ground-staff in HKG fixed this up for him.
In theory it works, but the erratic practices of NZ at checkin can cause headaches...
i think it depends on who you get, i have had AKL int'l check-in agent happily tag my bags from NZ->BR (Eva Air) without a fuss. (two separate tickets, BR does not belong to any alliance).
also there are unhelpful ones, wouldnt even bother (refused) to make a call to koru lounge for me to make an massage appointment.
