They're very strict on the usage of these certificates. There's also the risk of made up blackout dates not listed on the certificate that has affected someone on this forum.
By far the best usage in my opinion continues to be for trips to Canada - especially when starting from a southern or southwestern US city. Best bang for the buck as base fares to Canada are often considerably higher than domestic routes.
