But if check-in at Heathrow were willing to consider the linked tickets as a single through-booking on NZ1, issuing a single boarding pass and checking bags all the way to Auckland, then you'd just use the "holding pen" rather than clearing immigration and collecting bags, right?

I guess that's my question... Can you get away without having to clear immigration in LA, if the sectors are booked separately?
