Convair 990 at Mojave Airport
This beautiful old Convair 990 is parked out along the southern perimeter of Mojave Airport, on Highway 58 heading eastbound to Barstow. The 990 was the fastest airliner of its day and outside of the Concorde and TU-144, quite possibly the fastest jetliner ever built. Cruise speed was rated at Mach .90, or about 675 mph. Only 37 of them were ever built, with the principal operators being American, Swissair, SAS, Varig and Spantax.
