Yes, there are documented limits on stopovers. The limit is one, unless on an RTW award. As for limits on duration, it's ticket validity - generally travel must be completed one year from time of ticketing.
I think what the OP was asking was...is there a limit on how much time you can schedule on a layover, i.e. 48 hours, 1 week, 5 years, etc. Personally, I've never done beyond 48 hours but would be curious to know if DL limits the time before they consider one ticket to be closed and traveling on to require a new ticket.
