IMHO, the higher the income you state (reasonably supportable, of course--lying on an application is a crime

) the better your chances of getting approved, within reason.
I spoke to a lady who had problems getting her Chase apps approved. She raised her stated income from $75K/yr to $120K and the cards started coming. Of course, she was able to support the new figure, had previously understated due to, apparently, some misplaced modesty.
PS If income is under a hundred bucks a year forget applying.
