Collecting miles does not result in status.. but the miles on the AE program will allow you to accumulate points towards flights offered by AE (Aeroplan). The type of flight chosen and the amounts of point is like a currency.. depending on the choice will be the required amount of points to redeem the flight..
I am clear on the accumulation from all sources vs status from flying. If the ultimate intent of collecting mileage currency is flight redemption, then achieving status to support increased mileage redemption options would be a logical path to pursue. In my case, I cannot get Top Tier status on AC without crediting miles to AE, so therefore, for me, miles and status are indeed linked.
