One-Way that's not a One-Way

Forgive me if I come across sounding dumb. I'd like to think I've done enough traveling to know what I'm doing, but even this one is new to me.

I'm traveling from Greensboro, NC (GSO) to Spokane (GEG) the day after Christmas. I've been trying to find the cheapest flight and finally made the plunge when I saw a K fare on the Delta website for $379. The routing is rather unusual: GSO-ATL-STL-SLC-GEG, but it saved me $400 so why not?

I get the email confirmation from Delta. I immediately call to upgrade to first, since it was a K fare. The woman, after being taken aback by the odd routing, then tells me it will be 12,500 and goes ahead and upgrades me on the flights where there are G seats: 2 of the 4 segments.

Today, I get a call from Delta saying that I have insufficient miles for the flight, that it will cost 25,000 miles: 12,500 for each way. I politely explain that it is a one-way flight, just with four segments. After being on hold for 15 minutes, he comes back and tells me there's nothing he can do. I speak with his supervisor and again explain that I bought a one-way ticket through their website and my reservation email from them indicates the same thing.

The woman basically doesn't believe me, saying that because STL isn't a hub, there's no way I would be routed through there. I would have to go out of my way to book this ticket. Maybe I booked it through a travel agency, and they booked two separate tickets for me? I explained again that no, I bought the ticket through Delta.com.

After again explaining that they would never route me through a non-hub, I did another search. This one pulls up a slightly different route, but with the same concept.

The person wouldn't budge, so I eventually told them to remove the upgrade from the first half (since it's the two shortest flights). I'm slight annoyed for two reasons: for one, it was explained to me the first time it was 12,500 for the total flight. Secondly, I booked it through their website as a single flight.

Can someone offer some clarity on this for me? If I goofed in some way, I'm willing to accept that. Any advice on how to proceed? And if they're calling it two separate tickets, does this mean I have to go re-check my bags, etc. in STL? Like I said, I'm usually on top of things, but this is brand new to me.

Thanks all!
