To be really precise, 261/2004 does not apply to your case since you volonteered. The airlines are free to offer you a lower compensation, and you are free to accept or deny the offer. If you were to be denied boarding (involuntarily), you are owed €600 cash pp. Nevertheless, as I guess SK arranged for you to get to ORD without too much delay, this sounds like a nice deal for you and your kids when your trip was "free" in the first place.
