Question 4 hr transit in YVR: LGW-YVR...YVR-YYC-YHZ Two Separate Tickets & Airlines. Sensible?

I found a few threads on this topic but they focused on international-YVR-US transits.

A relation of mine (non-frequent flyer) is seriously considering booking
London Gatwick LGW-YVR (AirTransat)
YVR-YYC-YHZ (WestJet)

This would be two separate tickets and the connection time is 4 hours in YVR, arriving 2pm, departing 6pm.
Is this actually feasible?
I'm not familiar with AirTransat and how well they keep to schedules but I get the impression they've got a poor reputation and this feels to me a bit of a squeeze should/when something happens to the original timetable.

For what it's worth, they then intend to route
YHZ-YYZ
(5 days)

YYZ-YVR
(6 days)

YVR-LGW

They're doing it this way round because it works out cheaper and they wanted to 'visit the east coast whilst in Canada'...

Personally I think it's bonkers, but hey-ho. Would appreciate you're expert advise on this idea though.
