No such luck, I'm afraid - they only pair you with a stranger of the same sex.
Last time I took the Glasgow sleeper, the chap I was sharing with wouldn't shut up, so I headed down to the lounge car. The host said he didn't have enough change to sell me just one beer, so (rather cheekily) suggested I buy a second.
The lounge car is quite jolly - I got chatting to a couple from Essex who were on their way to Dundee to pick up their latest eBay purchase of a bouncy castle (and a Ford Transit to keep it in).
