How to Determine Age of Hotel?

After a fair amount of travel, I've come to realize that the age of a hotel (or time elapsed since complete renovation) can be an outstanding proxy for expected stay quality. I would generally rather stay in a brand-new Holiday Inn Express, for example, than a ratty old full-service Hilton.

Are there any publicly-available sources for the construction and/or renovation dates of individual properties?
