I wouldn't consider booking more than a month out an emergency. If it was a last minute purchase you would truly discover the cost of an 'emergency ticket'.

If you were more flexible with dates (leaving a week earlier and returning a week later) you could get it down into the $800's on DL (or UA, or China Air)
