I'm just glad it wasn't me. I would have answered a semi-verbal "hrmph" or "None of your business."

I think your friend should have been out-raged that TSOs would dare make small talk! The nerve of some people.

It was just small talk. Same thing happened to me this last year when I went to the gym, scanned my ID, my info appears on the computer screen, and the counter person saw my DOB - and said "Happy Birthday". You know, some people simply do that.
