I'm just glad it wasn't me. I would have answered a semi-verbal "hrmph" or "None of your business."
My standard answer is that every day is a good day but some are better than others. It says nothing which is the intention. Furthermore, it is always true.

They really do not care whether I had a good birthday, so they should not pretend to care.
