I flew LAN in and out of the Falklands 19 times between 2000 and 2006, all booked by my (previous) organization's travel department. If it's a scheduled LAN flight it should be open to award bookings just as any other flight in the network. However, some of the flights were charters for groups coming off of Antarctic cruises and they added the 2-3 paying pax to the back of the bus - I'm not sure what the policy is in those situations. I have never used kms or miles to get to the Falklands and I was on government fares that didn't earn any kms or miles, anyway, so I don't know about that side of it.

The LAN flights, too, get the Tornado escort, or they did when I was flying there. They don't have much else to do, I guess, and as a private airline versus an RAF aircraft, I think that's SOP for landing at an air force base. Always exciting coming and going from Mt. Pleasant.

As far as whether or not the Falklands are worth a week, I think they definitely are. Don't expect much in the way of services and nightlife (though some of the bars do get cranking with all of the British Antarctic Survey people coming in off the ice!), and be prepared for long views over quite barren terrain, but they have their own beauty. There is a lot of bird watching that can be done, the tours of some of the war sites are interesting, and the lamb is incredible!

Lots of options are open for touring the two islands - be sure to plan ahead, though I really don't think the islands often find themselves at capacity.
