I have a hard time agreeing with this. Spending 30k a year on flights in order to get a round trip for 1 person somewhere, taxes and other fees not included (correct me if I'm wrong), doesn't seem like a super deal. Yes it's better than nothing but to me it's no more than a small token of appreciation for spending your hard earned money on their airline.
Does anyone here think it's better off to use the non status miles on gift cards?
That depends how much flying and effort you put into it...
In a years time I had enough miles for my gf and I to do the following biz trip
YUL-MUC(stop)-VCE(stop)-FRA-CDG(stop)-FRA-MUC-YUL
Retail value 13,000$, cost to me 600$
So I get to spend 2 weeks in europe for virtualy free with the gf...
Useless miles, sure if you waist them on toasters and gift cards. If you pump out some nice complicated itins or mini-rtws... well thats up to you. And what do you think the modern airline is? A charity? All have simmilar offerings and simmilar rewards... and yes, it is better then absolutly nothing. Fly westjet for example for a year and then tell me which you perfer.
