Re: taking aisle and window seat- I do this too under the theory that if there is going to be an empty middle seat on the plane, why shouldn't it be next to me? but I won't take the exit row, as often the empty middle seats are towards the back.

Same thing with hoping for an empty adjacent seat on the two seat AE sides.
