Given that my job requires me to regularly traipse round to cities on four different continents, nothing beats being on holiday and waking up in a hotel that's nowhere near a concrete jungle, and where I instantly know where I am rather than having that daily three seconds of confusion where I wonder which hotel/city I'm in and what day it is. Accordingly:
Ngorongoro Crater Lodge: the decor might be slightly on the kitschy side, but the stunning views across the crater more than make up for it. Sat in the bathtub with a gin-and-tonic in hand and a giraffe grazing on a tree directly outside the balcony... one doesn't get to see this in Frankfurt / Hong Kong / Tokyo on a daily basis.
Poggio Ai Santi: low-key, no fuss agriturismo set on a verdant hilltop in coastal Tuscany, with stunning views down to the coast and across to Elba and Corsica... the antithesis to all those urban jungles in Asia that I need to travel to.
Begawan Giri (or the Como Shambhala at Begawan Giri or whatever it calls itself nowadays): our favourite place in Bali, up in the dense wooded hills of Ubud and far away from the madding crowds down in Kuta.
