A friend in Madrid once told me that they regarded IB as a "national disgrace".
Having flown them a couple of times I would agree--tho this was maybe 15 years ago. IB may have improved since then.

I too prefer non-stops but maybe in this case I'd go with a better carrier and connect. CO has service MAD/EWR.
