Because there's dozens of others on the same plane in F/with status who do not try to look so self-important as to stand at the boarding time when the flight isn't even close to boarding, annoying the airline employees and their fellow passengers. ~200k miles across the 3 alliances last year and I've never crowded the boarding line before the agents call. (Standing around the general gate area is fine, I realise not everybody wants to sit)
It's not about looking self-important. It's about getting on the plane early, and not having to fight through the masses of people who invariably line up early anyway. How is standing in line annoying anyone reasonable? Especially, if you're entitled to be there anyway.
Just because it's not important to you and/or you wouldn't do it yourself doesn't mean others shouldn't do it if that's how they want to spend their time.
