Easyjet does so without issue, as long as there is any availability on the earlier flight, independent of fare class. I don't see why AF should deny these requests, as it enables them to sell an extra last-minute ticket for the later flight. And seeing that getting on an earlier flight cannot be guaranteed in advance, I doubt this system will see much abuse.
