If you are going straight through, then BA's baggage allowance should apply - and in practice, BA will through-check the bags to Sydney so you won't have to deal with QF people at HKG.
See this article for an overview of the current rules:
http://www.businesstraveller.com/asi...ggage-policies; BA is the Most Significant Carrier for your journey, if you are going straight through.
I'm not sure how these rules work if you break your journey in Hong Kong and have a stopover there.
On the way back, you're on BA all the way so no issue arises.

In which case, you will be fine.
Exactly my thinking
the OP will be checking in with BA at LHR T3, if connecting and not having a stop over the first dealing with QF will be on boarding or in the QF lounge during the stop over.
BA will check the bags through onto your connecting flight if your not having a few days between legs so i dont think that the OP will experience any problems at all with the bag allowance.
One other tip for the OP, if i were you i would (if you havnt already) make sure that within your membership year you have taken prior to your OZ trip at least one other BA coded flight as the OZ trip will bring you fairly close to silver status, something that you wont get to without 4 BA coded sectors.
especially important if your doing any flying in OZ with QF
