No, you can't

I had two separate open jaws LHR-IAD/BWI-LHR last month, both T class, both returning on the same flight. One cash, one TA (amex)

Phoned up (as it's an open jaw) to MFU them on the return flight, there was tons of availability. MFUed the cash booking, but was told I couldn't mfu the TA booking. Was offered an upgrade price of about £1500

Did an airport upgrade of $400 for the TA one in the end.

TA bookings, at T-24, which aren't open jaw, often get offers at check in for paying for a £99/£399 upgrade to W/J, but miles always remains greyed out.
