I often fly between Japan and US. Good recommendations in this thread. Of them, starting the trip rested is largely underrated, I think. Some people may try to stay awake the night before or get less than normal sleep the night before because of last minute packing/preparations. I've had the best luck with jet lag both ways when I had decent sleep the night before. Also, I always look at the sun squinting my eyes to get my body clock adjusted on the first day. In Seattle, probably no sun to look at, so I just go to Starbucks.
