Before the trip, try to get up as late in the morning as is possible, without being late for work.

Mimic Japanese time. When getting on the plane, take a nap. Wake up 2-3 hours later. If possible, try to stay awake afterwards. Upon arrival into Japan, try to stay up until at least 7 p.m. then go to bed.

The alternative is to stay on Chicago time in Japan. If so, you will be waking up early and going to bed immediately after an early dinner.

Don't bother with drugs, coffee, or depriving yourself of sleep.
