Actually, the cost to gain/keep status is often more than the cost to just be a "free agent" as beaubo mentioned at the seminar last weekend (which, funny enough I decided last summer to be as of Mar 1, 2012). So many ways to "pay as you go" for the benefits vs. paying so much up front for 'status'. Then one is not bound to a specific airline/alliance.
