Even if you never stay at a Starwood property, the 1.25 airline miles per dollar earned more than makes up for it, not to mention the extra points earned on SPG spend. The flexibility of SPG over Amex MR more than makes up for it though, the ability to essentially use any airline's FFP to credit miles to is worth more than any transfer bonuses that Amex MR can offer.
