You didn't mention the age or type of family member. My parents, brother and sister took 3-4 family vacations a year and most times my parents in first, kids in coach.
If availability is an issue, and kids are of age, I would get 2 first awards and dump the kids in the back.
I think we have a winner! That is a good option. When we traveled as kids we always traveled as a family in coach. Not sure if it was a money issue or my parents were to scared to leave me and my 3 sisters alone in the back of the plane. Either way the only thing I knew about first class was I was not to touch anything or anybody when we walked though it.
This is a good option which may balance out the mileage redemptions a bit.
