OS is VERY strict on weight for checked luggage as well as carry on weight--they have scales at most of their gates and they weigh everything. In economy your carry-on is limited to 8 kilos and if you are over by even two kilos, they will make you repack or check the bag and attempt to charge you if you have already checked a bag.

Add to that the fact that you have to go through security at the gate and that the holding areas are way too small for the amount of people on most of their flights and VIE becomes a very poor airport for transit to a long haul flight.

Last week flying to IAD they listed boarding time as 1:45 before the flight which is ridiculous, since they only started boarding 30 minutes before flight time. In the lounge they said that an hour would be enough but that still meant half an hour standing with two hundred other people which made for a poor pre-boarding experience. I am scratching VIE off my list for long-haul until the new terminal opens and being very careful with my carry-ons in any case.
