You might as well and benefit from 1K status until the programs merge in 2012. At that point, the new MP with new elite status names and levels will be implemented and you will have whatever status you earn for 2012 anyway.

When the 2012 program is implemented, 1K will be helpful in one particular way. UG will shift from elite status to fare class with Y-UP available on Y & B fares for all elites and M for 1K+. A marginally cheaper high-fare bucket ticket will get you an UG.
