There was a pretty substantial TV news item yesterday describing why the government is stepping in and influencing the course of SIA's unions. The Minister of Transport, Yeo Cheow Tong, was interviewed saying that of the 30 million passengers passing through Changi, 15 million are ferried by SQ. SQ's pivotal role in Changi airport's status as airhub for Asia cannot be overemphasised.
In light of the continuing competition from other regional airports, any challenge to SQ's performance will be closely observed by the govt. Which is also why the govt has rapped the knuckles (albeit most gently) of SQ management to shape up as well.
Pretty interesting information.
