Has it ever occurred to you that your being locked out of the F cabin on a reward ticket might be... well, intentional? Not you specifically, of course, but reward tickets generally.

Nothing in the Star agreement requires an airline to open up reward seats in First Class closer to departure. If they opened up all the empty F seats for awards D-7, then NH F will quickly start to resemble UA F. And no-one wants that.
