I am posting this in the KrisFlyer forum as SQ is the airline that I most travel with, and notice this.

It seems that the flight attendants are quite good at guessing the correct language to use with passengers. I am American Born Chinese, where English is my preferred language, however, I do speak Mandarin Chinese. I do some flights from Mainland China cities to Singapore, where the flight attendants are quite accurate to use English with me. I am usually dressed quite normal (so not obviously non-Chinese) and am not carrying English language newspapers.

So I wonder how they know this? Is there a passenger manifest with nationalities that the flight attendants review? Or is this just intuition and trial-and-error where they guess right with me?
