Agreed. Sounds like the OP wants to build a R/T by using an award one-way and a paid fare on the return -- with the hope of paying half the price of a R/T fare rather than having to pay a true one-way fare which tend to be quite a bit more expensive.
Regrettably, AA does not off such an option to mix and match award/paid fare to save money.
Yes that is exactly what I was trying to ask. I wasn't sure if it was something that could be done or not. I appreciate the response and hope that is something AA may look into in the future.
