Agreed. Sounds like the OP wants to build a R/T by using an award one-way and a paid fare on the return -- with the hope of paying half the price of a R/T fare rather than having to pay a true one-way fare which tend to be quite a bit more expensive.
Regrettably, AA does not off such an option to mix and match award/paid fare to save money.
Maybe AA should offer such a fare? Now that would be a good service for members of AAdvantage i.e a special fare back to base for users of an award flight. Or of course you might be expected to buy the miles.
