It sounds like the OP only has enough miles for a one-way award, and is finding that the cost of a one-way paid ticket (ORD-LHR or LHR-ORD) costs considerably more than 1/2 the price of a roundtrip paid ticket on that particular route.
Agreed. Sounds like the OP wants to build a R/T by using an award one-way and a paid fare on the return -- with the hope of paying half the price of a R/T fare rather than having to pay a true one-way fare which tend to be quite a bit more expensive.
Regrettably, AA does not off such an option to mix and match award/paid fare to save money.
