AMS ATC priorities: operations first, safety second
"
A KLM McDonnell Douglas MD-11, registration PH-KCK performing flight KL-713 from Amsterdam (Netherlands) to Paramaribo (Suriname), was enroute at FL320 about 20nm east of London,EN (UK) when the crew decided to turn around and return to Amsterdam due to some undisclosed technical problem. On approach to Amsterdam the crew was advised to expect runway 18R, air traffic control declined to change the runway arguing that in case the aircraft was unable to vacate the runway the airport could still use runway 18C. The aircraft landed safely on runway 18R about one hour after turning around, vacated the runway and stopped on the adjacent taxiway for about 5 minutes before continuing to the apron."
