CO's DirecTV system also has ~9 preloaded channels (a few movies, drama, comedy, kids, special interest). These are always available even when DirecTV has lost signal, although as noted you must pay for DirecTV even though you may only watch these 9 channels. Note that these channels are not "OnDemand" they play on a loop.
OP was flying LAX-HNL, which is usually operated with a 737, hence the DirecTV IFE system.
Regarding CO's AVOD on the 777's and 752's, it is outstanding, with an excellent selection of movies and other content.
