Jumbo laptop, or small laptop and external monitor and keyboard

I don't fly very much these days. I do have two offices that I go to plus my home office. I do work from home a good bit as my wife travels and I have to do some laundry sometimes in the mornings.

I currently use Dropbox to sync all my files, which is very helpful. However, I use some legal software that the vendor says can't be synced with Dropbox -- something about Dropbox not catching the updates of the database files. So I am thinking about getting a reasonable quality laptop that I will use wherever I go.

Option 1 is to go with a relatively small but powerful laptop and just have a monitor, keyboard and mouse that I can plug into the laptop at each location and essentially have a desktop computer. When traveling elsewhere I would have a small, easy-to-carry laptop.

Option 2 is to get a jumbo "desktop replacement" laptop. I would still have a mouse at each location as touchpads don't work, or I will carry a mouse with me. The advantage of this is that my work spots are extended far beyond the three spots I currently have. I can move over to a table, to another office and so forth. My fear is that I'm going to get the "worst of both worlds," in that my jumbo laptop will be heavy and a pain to lug around but still will not be as satisfying to work on as a traditional desktop (all my current desktops are six or more years old, so even a cheap laptop is going to be a speed improvement!).

FWIW, I had a big, clunky laptop years ago that I hated lugging around airports. But as I said, I don't fly much any more. I only live a half-mile from my office, but to be honest I rarely walk. If I get a giant laptop I probably will never walk, just because I don't want to lug a 15-lb. weight half a mile. Also, every year or so we take a foreign trip or a cruise. Obviously it would be nice to take a jumbo laptop to watch movies, but I don't want to build my life around this.

Anyway, I am just curious if any of you have done either of the two options I have described above, and if so how happy you have been doing so. Thanks!
