I think as a whole it's YMMV. I've experienced both being asked and not being asked on the same trip at 2 different properties.

In your scenario, I would be careful as you're probably a gold member and using a diamond level member's perks - they are probably more likely to ensure the companion is present but this is just a wild guess.
