Is there an issue with different sizes allowed on outbound vs. return? It's been a few years, but I thought I remember that a bag that was perfectly legal size-wise from US - UK but it was too large for return UK - US.
A few years ago, the Brits at BAA were being very strict with enforcing the limits. AA was being not-so-strict. Most bags advertised as 22 inch rollaboards are not - they are 22 inches without the wheels and handles. Those bags could be taken as carryons to Europe, but had to be checked on the return, but they never fit in the sizers.
