Admittedly it was a 20 minute phone call, but the chap at ba was incredibly patient and polite, working through this step by step with me.
He's managed to rebook us - not perfect, but not far off. Fees appear to be gbp100 for the changes plus gbp 30 for the re-route. Granted that's multiplied by 5 but I think we're still in the money given the fact we get 125k miles back and earn another slug to boot.
Anyway, much less hassle, although I look forward to first reports of immigration queues at mia coming off the 'new' flight from London.
Once again, thanks for working through this with me. BA never quibbled over the ability to do this, but I was certainly pleased to learn it was possible!
