So, my roundtrip SFO-IAH-SJO was my first Continental flight as an elite. Two interesting data points that dismayed me on the process.
1) When I checked in for SFO-SJO I was offered a ~$250 paid upgrade to first despite being on the upgrade list. I have a G fare, so I can't imagine this is the price difference between G or F,Y,B. Definitely not an upfare, so what is this? Of course, I just miss clearing.

2) On my return flight from IAH-SFO, it seems one person did not show up for first. I watch the gate agent walk to the back and retrieve a CO pilot deadheading and move him up to the empty seat in F. A UA 1K was sitting across from me, and we were both stunned that they did this.

I'm not sure I'm very fond of either of these practices. They both seem contrary to stated policy.
