I suppose there is nothing to prevent you from booking a "phantom" itinerary for yourself and cancel it later to get around the booking fee for using your miles for someone else. It is a gray area and I wouldn't make a habit of doing it as it still leaves a trail. IIRC the booking fees are $30 per person. I booked 3 tickets for family members earlier this year and it was $90 total. Sure the fee sucks, but those are AAs rules.
