Right from the mouth of United. When a situation arises where they are unable to complete transportation, a passenger may return to the point of origin and receive a refund for the unflown segments of travel. The total value of the ticket is deducted by the value of the flown segments.
In my case, I flew HDN-DEN-ORD (ORD-HKG Cancelled), and United would only refund $306 out of $1278 original ticket (HDN-DEN-ORD-HKG-SGN // SIN-HKG-ORD-DEN-HDN)
