757 uncommon outside of the US

Next month I am going to be back in the states for a week, and two of my flight segments are on 757s. It got me thinking that I've not seen a single 757 in Europe, and outside of Thomas Cook/Condor, I don't think I've seen a single main-line European airline that flies 757s. In retrospect, I don't recall seeing any in Asia, South America or the Middle East either. Why is this? It seems to be a somewhat popular aircraft in the US.
