The Trip In Vain Initiative
I have started the Trip In Vain Initiative. Which will hopefully result in enough voices and experiences coming forth to create effective policy at all U.S. air carriers.
The "Trip In Vain Initiative" is founded to address the issue where passengers have their outbound itinerary interrupted by actions within the control of the air carrier which result in the loss of purpose of travel. Examples include, delay or cancellation as the result of: Maintenance, Crew, Labor Action, Aircraft Availability, Operational Decision, etc.
The proposed "Trip in Vain" voluntary remedy or amendment to the Passenger Bill of Rights would compel US air carriers during flight interruptions within their control:
(1) offer acceptable alternative transportation to the final destination, within 4 hours of original arrival time
(2) permit waiver for acceptable revision of itinerary; or,
(3) offer transportation to the point of origin and provide a full refund.
I work in this industry and understand the financial impacts; but, I also acknowledge corporate responsibility. The primary mission of air carriers is safe transportation from Point A to Point B. When we cannot fulfill our obligations to complete our mission, the responsibility should fall upon the carrier, not the passenger.
